Teaching Philosophy

¡Baila a lo Cubano! At The Cuban Dance Project, our instruction focuses on social dancing, emphasizing authenticity, tradition, and empirical learning.

"Al paso, yo vengo al paso"

- Los Van Van

Work moves at the speed of trust. We take our time to find the groove, learn well, question, and support one another, recognizing that we all have different rhythms and that good work is done by building trust.

We're all about Cuban social dances— Casino, Rueda de Casino, Son Cubano, Rumba, Reggaeton, and Reparto. Our classes focus on how everyday people (bailadores) dance, focusing on the joy and connection of the social dance floor, a path distinct from that of professional bailarines.

We value authenticity and the complexities that exist amidst the tradition and evolution of Cuban dance. We are interested in learning empirically and constructively using technique as a tool for expression. Social-cultural context matters to us, and we do our best to teach using this lens.

We ensure that a portion of the proceeds from every class goes towards supporting Cuban art initiatives based here in the United States.

We value tolerance, respect, acceptance, and positivity for all races, genders, sexuality, dance styles, and dance abilities. When you're dancing with a partner, we ask that you communicate openly and check in with each other. If you happen to experience or witness any behavior that does not align with these principles, please speak privately with an instructor.
